Aug 12 2019

Love and Destiny remains its popularity and high ratings since the premiere on July 15th. Love and Destiny is a love story based on Shan Hai Jing (Classics of Mountains and Seas), a compilation of mythic geography and beasts. Therefore, mythical creatures became one of the essential elements in the series.

Continuing from the previous chapter, which presents the elegant classical style of the CG environment in Love and Destiny, this chapter will bring you through the art designs of all 11 magnificent mythical creatures and how the VFX team brought them to life.

◆ TunTian

TunTian is one of the main creatures in Love and Destiny. The VFX team focused on researching the characteristic of TunTian, such as the eagle-like feather and texture of crocodile-like skin. Despite the creature’s nonexistent, with their repeatedly research and developments, the VFX team has successfully created the majestic mythical creature after going through numerous versions of modeling and texture mappings.

▋ Concept Art

To create the lifelike fur and the complexity in its details, the VFX team modeled 5 to 6 layers of fur, including the primary fur model and other miscellaneous furs.

Regarding the motion of Tuntian, muscles and fats would affect its body shape, like other living animals. To simulate the lifelike movements of its body, the VFX team began with modeling bones, muscles, and fats. Then the team adds the shakiness and extrusion of muscles and fats through computer simulation. The leading VFX technology of creating such a CG creature is a first in the Chinese film industry.

◆ XiaoBaiZe

XiaoBaiZe is the representative of all the cuteness in Love and Destiny! The fluffy little creature has won the audience’s heart in its first appearance. Anyone would die to hug it in their arms when they see it. XiaoBaiZe is a mythical creature based on rabbit and fawn, with a rabbit-like body and antlers on its head.

XiaoBaiZe has a characteristic of pure and cute, so it is designed to have pure white and fluffy fur. The three eye-like gems on its body could change color based on the mood of XiaoBaiZe.

▋ Concept Art

To create the endearing lively XiaoBaiZe, the VFX team designed lots of soft and flexible movement for it, and even adds some cat-like fur cleaning motion when it’s relaxed.

◆  DaBaiZe

DaBaiZe is the grown-up version of XiaoBaiZe. It has a body of leopard with a deer antler on its head, three long tails, and hard skin covering its feet. DaBaiZe is designed to be fierce compare to XiaoBaiZe.

▋ Concept Art

The VFX team purposely increase the amount of chest hair in their first design of the model to give an imposing look to DaiBaiZe but result in its legs being too thick comparing to concept design. Therefore, the VFX team adjusted DaiBaiZe’s model by pushing the chest and belly inwards to keep all the hairs and be faithful to the original concept.

◆ YingLong

YingLong is the incarnation of Love and Destiny’s leading character, JiuChen. YingLong represents a traditional Chinese dragon with two pairs of angel wings, and it has a prestigious, elegant, and sacred image.

▋ Concept Art

YingLong is the combination of amphibian and flying animals, and combining these two elements is the most challenging part of creating this creature. The VFX team tried various modeling scales and versions of light transmission through feathers; they even created the crystal-like texture for dragon scales. After going through those detail adjustments, the VFX team created the perfect mythical creature for JiuChen, the war god in the story.

◆ HuoDou

HuoDou is a wolf-like mythical creature with blue skin, and it has some human features because it was transformed from a human. In the story, HuoDou lived in a tower that conceals one of the most dangerous creatures in the world, and it can jump, climb, and swing anywhere within the tower. Due to the character settings of HuoDou, the concept team designed its arms to be human and ape-like.

◆ ZhuYin

ZhuYin is a snake-like mythical creature with a human-like head and heterochromia iridum. Since the creature doesn’t have any foot, the concept team put a lot of hard work on designing ZhuYin’s face, its skin, and the black angler on its head. The VFX team also focuses on perfecting the complexity of ZhuYin’s skin texture and the small folds in its pupil. All these details formed a frightening feel when animators bring them into life.
